Description: Mrs. Karen Anthes is a fantastic teacher in the Duval County school system. She started her teaching career later in life than most after raising four kids, and she incorporates her love for children into her teaching processes. Her students also love her, but her caring for her students extends beyond the classroom as she developed a mentoring program for her school. She started “Mentors Making A Difference” in 2014 and it has grown to nearly fifty volunteer mentors that visit with at-risk children once a week during the school day. This volunteer program that Mrs. Anthes pours her heart and soul into has resulted in amazing improvement in so many areas of the children’s lives – grades, behavior, social skills, and self-esteem. Her mentors really are making a difference. In addition to recruiting volunteers for the mentoring program and spending so much of her personal time coordinating and training mentors, Mrs. Anthes and her husband have been leading a Celebrate Recovery program at their church for over ten years. “CR” as it is known, is 12 step recovery program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind. If there is anyone in Jacksonville that has earned the title of “local hero”, Mrs. Karen Anthes fits the bill. It is with great pride and pleasure that her family and friends nominate her in the “teacher” category.
